What is Low-E Glass?

Low-E glass, short for low-emissivity glass, is a high-performance glass designed to improve the energy efficiency of windows and glass products. It features a microscopically thin, transparent coating—usually made of metal or metallic oxide—that reflects infrared (heat) energy while allowing visible light to pass through.

How Does Low-E Glass Work?

The secret to Low-E glass lies in its invisible coating. This coating reflects heat energy (infrared light) back to its source:

  • In the summer, it reflects exterior heat away from your building, helping keep interiors cooler.

  • In the winter, it reflects interior heat back into your space, reducing heat loss.

There are different types of Low-E coatings:

  • Passive Low-E (hard coat) – more durable, ideal for colder climates.

  • Solar Control Low-E (soft coat) – provides better performance in warmer climates by blocking more heat.

Why is Low-E Glass Beneficial?

Low-E glass offers a range of benefits that make it a smart investment for both residential and commercial buildings:

Energy Efficiency

Reduces the need for heating and cooling, which lowers utility bills year-round.

UV Protection

Blocks a significant portion of harmful ultraviolet rays, reducing fading and damage to furniture, flooring, and artwork.

Comfort

Maintains more consistent indoor temperatures, eliminating hot spots near windows and drafts in colder months.

Sustainability

Reduces your carbon footprint by minimizing energy consumption, aligning with green building standards.

Clarity & Natural Light

Unlike tinted glass, Low-E allows plenty of natural light in without the heat, preserving clear views and bright interiors.

Whether you're building new or upgrading old windows, Low-E glass is a smart, long-term solution that enhances comfort, efficiency, and property value.
